Ambitions and the damned future.

I have been considerably busy of late. With meetings to prepare for DIC and family dinners and friend's birthdays, I've kept myself occupied.
Well now since I'm ending my 15th year alive, people, especially adults constantly ask me and others who are unfortunately around my age one BIIIGG question. 'So, little girl, what do you plan to do after school?'

BADABANG!

Million dollar question. If you are Indian, most people expect only either one of the following answers.

a) 'Haha, not sure la Aunty.' Followed by an awkward silence.
b) 'I'm thinking Medicine la Uncle, you know like Appa, Amma and the rest of my family'. :P
c) 'Definitely engineering. Good salary and a prospective future husband from Chee-ca-go'.
d) 'Law. Because Uncle Mani's daughter and Aunty Devi's son are doing it'.
e) 'Accounting Aunty. I'm good with numbers, Appa said so'.

You see, the adult average Indian brain has been programmed to only accept that information. Anything besides this like Journalism or Business Management or better still, MASS COMM is frowned upon and hastily one conclusion is drawn about you.

She. Must. Be. Stupid.

See what I mean? Thats why the sad percentage of idealistic young Indians LIKE ME often times opt to give them the standard answer, Option (a).

To tell you the truth, I don't exactly have a specific idea of what I want to do when I leave. I was thinking somewhere along the lines of International Relations or Political Sciences. I tried answering one Aunty yesterday when she popped the question. I was greeted with 'Is it a Science degree?'

So that will probably be the first and last time I'm answering a nosy ol' Aunty / Uncle. Those baaddd judgemental people. :(

2 Cheers:

  1. I looove this post. See, we all go through the same thing. We damned yeendians. Next time you get asked this , just say oh? What I want to do? I am going to marry a rich old man and live happily ever after. That would probably be more than what you're doing. So there.

Let em' think what they want. You're rich and happy. :)
